The Military and Peace Building

Published in November 2001

Between the profession of war and the horizon of peace, the military institution has played a central role.

Its function, its traditions and the very principles of its life - sometimes refered to as values - as well as the technical imperatives of its mission interact with all of national and international life.

Thinking through the complexity of today’s world requires a reflection of the military themselves about the way force has been or should be used at the service of right, in order to contribute efficiently to the construction of peace.

The Peace School (Ecole de la paix) is at a time: 1) a mediation and solidarity centre: at the crossroads between international or local initiatives for peace building. 2) an educational centre: Missions in schools and educational tools to encourage mutual respect. 3) A research centre: focused on conflicts analysis, conversion of the arms industries, minority issues, trauma reparations, Peace culture... 4) A documentation and information centre.
