The European rural world and sustainability

During the Valencia encounter in May 1999 on the European rural world and sustainability, the participants defined 5 axis of reflection : 1) the new contracts between agriculture and society ; 2) the alimentation, the quality and health ; 3) the sustainable production systems ; 4) Europe and other part of the world ; 5) Citizenship, power and democracy. For each of these topics, the authors have exposed in this article the problematic and raised the key questions for the debate.

The majority of the European Agricultural policies were conceived in a period of time where the European Society had totally different shape and structures. The evolutions these last decades had an impact on the future of the territory, on the use of European countryside, on their social functions, on the links between cities and countryside. This document begins by acknowledging this fact : Europe is an urban civilisation, having a rich and alive rural historic past, but Europe is not a rural economy anymore. Europe faces today the choice between two possibilities : would Europe preserve its rural space as decorated gardens, or would it decide to implement at its own scales principles, rights, and duties in order to render possible a sustainable development ?
