Biodiversity, GMOs, and Privatization of the Living WorldYaoundé Declaration; World Conference of Traditional Farmers; Camerun, May 6-11, 2002Family farmers: facing the 21st century. Results of the meeting between 130 representatives of family farmers from Africa, Asia, America and Europe, held to discuss and pursue alternatives to the challenges posed by the current trend to neo-liberal globalisation.
More than 130 representatives of family and indigenous farmers and artisanal fishermen from Africa, Asia, America and Europe, met at Yaounde in Cameroon to discuss and pursue alternatives to the challenges posed by the current trend to neo-liberal globalisation, by consulting small producers, indigenous people, family farmers and fishermen.
During five days of intense work, they exchanged information, discussed experiences, and analysed, amongst others, the following themes: - the impact of the neo-liberal model in each continent, - the WTO and regional integration, - food sovereignty and safety, - State reform and local powers, based on a participatory democracy, - the privatisation of human life being promoted by the multinationals, - the need to promote a culture of peace, - and finally the formulation of strategies which will strengthen family farming organisations and the participation by women and young people in all countries of the world.
