His or her answers to the questionnaire

... on the idea of the Alliance

The need that I see is for Alliances - for convergences and for the gathering of specific convergences - group, national, professional etc - into relation and interplay with other ’partial’ convergences.

Yes. The need for alliance-building - and the interplay, mutual enrichment and refinement of inter-alliances processes - has never been greater than in this fragmented and divided time. At the same time action is not carried out just with good intent or even just good ideas, and so the issue of how alliances in various sectors, and the sum total of grouped alliances, relates to power and the processes of making change happen, needs to be further explored and developed.

In particular, there needs to be a spirit in the Alliance process of redressing the imbalances of power and resources dividing North and South; of deliberately avoiding the imposition of value-systems and power structures (however unconsciously) that would undermine the attempt to move towards a truly equal and seriously respectful exchange and exploration process.

While the framework is clear enough, it still remains to be seen how an ’alliance-building process’ can both be supportive and facilitatory of sectoral, issue-based and geographically specific initiatives, while enabling such initiatives to be both independent, innovative and interconnected.

As above

In addition to ’gathering together’ and supportively facilitating ongoing and new initiatives proposed, linked and carried out be allies and others, I believe there needs to be a ’state of alliances’ review process, a reviving and strengthening of weak or declining sectors, some review of whether key sectors needing activity and not yet being acted on in terms of the alliance need to be stimulated or by some means active persons/initiatives in those sectors integrated - in other words, for there to be a -’health of the Alliance and the alliances’ process drawn from the membership of the Alliance itself....

While it is important to have calendar blocks in terms of years, it would be good to look at individual sector calendars, which relate to global institutions cycles eg the UN Millenium plus 5 September 05 meeting (no longer a possible objective for planned action)

Likewise, the Alliance own history process perhaps needs to be more clearly located within the larger historical contexts. For example, the last four years (2001 to 2005) have seen the strengthening of the exclusive alliance of the security agencies of the ’developed north’ to (by the use of information technology) develop paranoid fortresses which are suffocating their own citizens, in the effort to ’shut out’ terrorism......

Yes I will continue to take part in the Alliance, given the urgencies and emergencies of my situation and that of the country I live in!

Interested in being part of: the methodological group for the working procedures, the group of guarantors, the facilitation committee for the 2006-2007 strategy
