considered arable, which only half of is presently being cultivated. World
distribution varies widely.
Secondly, it is indispensable to life on earth, providing food, water
control, cleanliness of the food chain, shelter of terrestrial
biodiversity, chemical balance of biological activity, mineral reserves,
and a witness of man's passage on earth
Thirdly, it is a presently threatened resource. The great majority of
cultures grant little importance to soil, this being visible in the
