The representative from Rwanda submitted his ideas on alternative for
social integration. There was a discussion on what to propose as
foundations but no agreement was reached.
On the subject of better directing consumption, several those present
complained of the advertising methods prevailing in the capitalistic
countries, on the publicity invading the homes.
Alternatives to consumerism were discussed, and a list of suggestions is
going to be prepared.
As the next item the best use of savings was submitted, for the improvement
of societies.
It was affirmed that changing production systems would take some time, and
great care must be taken for the transient periods, so as not to allow that
we fall back on the old system. But this is necessary if we are to have
ten billion human beings living on our single earth. Industrial
production, industrial agriculture, both must learn to live with small
craftsmen, small agricultural tracts of land. It is absolutely necessary
that big enterprises be responsible and solidary with their smaller
counterparts. Only cooperation with each other and with the ecosystem can
promote a continued worthwhile life on this planet.
There must be some control of the financial markets, so that they may not
hinder social development, that is sustainable.
Ms. Keyward spoke on tourism as a possibility of exchange, of interaction
between societies of different cultures.
As to Governance and Citizenship, the sponsor of Algeria presented the
opinion of M. Chandon on the distribution of responsibilities among the
different centers of humankind, from the smallest to the planet itself.
Democracy, as the foundation of citizenship must not become a mere
delegation of the power of decision, if we are not to lose the benefits of
democracy as such.
After a short discussion it was agreed that the different levels and sizes
of territories, facing their local different problems, must find a way to
interact with others levels of government to find global solutions, of
overall merit.
