Quel genre de benefice peut-on esperer d'un forum interreligieux ?
Il ne faut sans doute pas trop l'attendre dans le domaine de la morale ou
dans des realisations humanitaires. En effet, toutes les religions prechent
une ethique, a peu pres la meme ethique, mais elles n'en ont pas
l'exclusivite ! Bon nombre d'agnostiques ou d'athees prechent aussi la paix,
la justice, la tolerance et la morale des droitse l'homme et les mettent
en pratique. Le recours aux religions n'est pas indispensable pour
promouvoir de telles valeurs : pour le faire, il suffit de collaborer avec
tous les hommes de bonne volonte.
Ce benefice, il est d'abord individuel : on ne peut que s'enrichir en
apprenant a mieux connaitre d'autres traditions religieuses et, hors de tout
syncretisme, la decouverte d'autres spiritualites nous questionne et nous
pousse a approfondir notre propre foi.
C'est sans doute dans le domaine de la vie spirituelle que les diverses
religions peuvent s'enrichir les unes les autres : beaucoup de chretiens
trouvent une aide à la priere aujourd'hui, en France, dans la méditation, le
yoga ou d'autres techniques corporelles issues des traditions orientales.
Moines chretiens et moines bouddhistes n'ont-ils pas, aujourd'hui, de
profitables echanges ?

Nos debats ne sont surement pas inutiles. La redaction de chartes,
l'organisation de rencontres interreligieuses dont Joseph Boehle nous a
recemment rappele qu'elles sont de plus en plus nombreuses temoignent de
reels progres dans la fraternite humaine mais, quand de hauts dignitaires
religieux n'y participent pas leur impact reste souvent limite. Comme ne
participent a notre forum ni le pape, ni le Dalai lama, nous devons sans
doute rester modestes.
Tout en revant, pour l'avenir, a une collaboration de toutes les religions
ne devrions-nous pas nous fixer comme tache, pour le present, de chercher a
eliminer les rivalites, les luttes voire les guerres de religion qui, plus
ou moins gravement, persistent encore dans tous les pays du monde ?
En France, par exemple, pays laic de vieille tradition chretienne, l'Islam
qui interesse 5% de la population est trop souvent meconnu, redoute ou
meprise. Les evenements d'Algerie ou d'Afghanistan aggravent evidemment
cette incomprehension. Avec l'aide de nos freres musulmans ne devrions nous
pas d'abord, nous, catholiques francais, nous efforcer de montrer à nos
compatriotes que l'Islam est aussi une voie d'amour et de tolerance ?

us to deepen our own faith.
It is probably in the domain of the spiritual life that the various
religions can enrich each other: many Christians today in France find help
for their prayer in meditation, in yoga or in other bodily techniques
stemming from oriental traditions. Christian monks and Buddhist monks today
have really profitable exchanges.

So what should be done in an iinterreligious forum? In what directions
should one act?
Our proceedings are not surely useless. The writing of charters,
the organization of inter-religious meetings (of which Joseph Boehle has
recently reminded us that there are more and more ) testify to real
progress in promoting human fraternity, but, when some of our high
religious dignitaries do not participate, their impact often remains
limited. As we do not have participation in our forum either by the Pope
nor the Dalai Lama, we must without doubt remain modest!
As for dreaming, for the future,of a collaboration of all religions, should
we not first set ourselves the task, for the present, to try for to
eliminate the rivalries and struggles or even the wars of religion that,
more or less seriously, do still persist in all countries of the world?
In France, for example, a "laic" country with an ancient Christian
tradition, Islam which involves 5% of the population is too often
unrecognized, suspected or despised. The events of Algeria or Afghanistan
evidently aggravate this incomprehension. With the help of our Muslim
brethren should we French Catholics not force ourselves to show to our
compatriots that Islam is also a way of love and tolerance?
