Dear Friends,
I am Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt, a Reader in Geography at The University of
Burdwan in eastern India. I have been reading about the environment and
teaching it to my students too. From that point of view I can claim to be
something of an environmental educator albeit in a poorer part of the world
than France.
I am very pleased to join your group of cyber discussants and congratulate
you all.
I have been increasingly concerned about the equity problems in our
society, and have felt that it has significant impact on what environment a
group of people are speaking of, and what education we are doling out to
others. Being able to teach first puts us on a higher ground and
practically stops all conversation between us and the taught. That
virtually closes our eyes to the subjectivities inherent in the environment
itself, and hence in any education about it. For example, we in the third
world have now begun to speak of local communities but often what they want
out of their specific environments does not match up to our notions of '
good ' or sustainable development. This is especially true where little
bits of modern development have penetrated the traditional societies. As a
result, we end up giving a sort of ' global education ' on environment in
which what is good or bad for poor people is dictated as much from above as
what used to be done before. We have thus come full circle. There are
immense differences in culture & economic well-being between groups within
and without a country, and these get invariably reflected in environmental
values of the people. How to reconcile them, considering the implications
in power relations?

sur l'environnement et l'enseigne aussi a mes etudiants. De ce point de vue
je peux pretendre etre ce qu'on appelle un educateur de l'environnement,
bien que dans une region du monde plus pauvre que la France.
Je suis tres content de m'engager dans votre groupe de cyber discussion et
vous felicite tous.
Je me suis preoccupe de plus en plus des problemes d'equite dans notre
societe, et ai ressenti que cela a un impact important sur le type
d'environnement dont les groupes de personnes parlent, et sur quel type
d'education nous offrons aux autres. La capacite d'enseigner nous met des
le debut sur un ' terrain ' plus haut et cela stoppe pratiquement toute
conversation entre nous et les etudiants. Ceci nous ferme virtuellement les
yeux face aux subjectivites inherentes a l'environnement lui-meme, et par
la-meme a toute education a l'environnement. Par exemple, nous, dans le
tiers monde, avons maintenant commence a parler aux communautes locales,
mais souvent ce qu'elles veulent par rapport a leur environnement
specifique ne correspond pas a nos notions de ' bon ' developpement, ou
developpement durable. C'est particulierement vrai la ou des bribes de
developpement moderne ont penetre dans les societes traditionnelles. En
consequence, nous finissons par donner une sorte d' 'education mondiale' a
l'environnement ou ce qui est bon ou mauvais pour les pauvres est dicte
depuis le haut, comme cela se faisait auparavant. Nous nous sommes ainsi
tous regroupes. Il y a des differences immenses de cultures & de bien etre
economique entre groupes a l'interieur et a l'exterieur d'un pays, et cela
se reflete invariablement dans les valeurs de l'environnement des
personnes. Comment les reconcilier, etant donnees les implications dans les
relations de pouvoir?
